Sweet Jane Tinctures

When choosing the right formula, an important consideration is the Cannabidiol (CBD) to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) ratio. We have carefully formulated our Sweet Jane tinctures to provide a variety of options for different preferences. The higher the CBD to THC ratio, the less psychoactive the effect. The chart below is designed to help you find your perfect ratio.

Extraction Method

Why do we use cold ethanol extractions?

At Humboldt Apothecary, all of our cannabis extracts are made using a cold ethanol wash.  Ethanol is a plant-based solvent that is made via a process of plant fermentation. It is highly efficient at extracting a wide range of plant compounds within the cannabis plant.  Because alcohols are bipolar in nature, they are able to form bonds with both water-soluble and fat-soluble plant compounds, making it the only solvent capable of preserving the chemical ratios as they exist in the plant in nature.  Because of this, it is the best choice for someone looking to reap the full benefits of a full-spectrum extract for health and wellness.

Why is a full-spectrum extract important?

The cannabis plant consists of a myriad of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other organic compounds.  While we tend to focus heavily on CBD and THC, it is this diversity of compounds that we still know so little about that work together to make the best and most effective extracts to receive the full therapeutic benefits. Research has demonstrated that whole plant cannabis extracts are more effective than single molecule extracts, so we know that the capturing the most representative extract of the whole plant is going to be the most effective form of an extract.

Can you Feel the Difference?

Most people find that they get more benefits from a lower dose from this type of an extraction.  That is because there is such a wide range of active constituents that are present in the extract.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

THC refers to a psychotropic cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant. It’s a chemical compound that’s responsible for the euphoric high feeling people experience when consuming Cannabis. Basically THC works by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and nervous system to produce psychoactive effects. When consuming THC, you may experience a range of short-term effects that may include euphoric feelings and can cause anxious feelings for some individuals.  If you experience an uncomfortable feeling when consuming THC, your body may react better to a CBD dominant formula.

Scientists have found that THC has a multitude of therapeutic benefits including, but not limited to the following: the ability to fight tumors, sleep aid, appetite stimulant, reduces nausea, decreases pain, and it’s a potent anti-inflammatory aid. Inflammation is an underlying factor that contributes to many modern diseases.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. CBD does not appear to have the same intoxicating effects found in THC, but it still has an effect on your body. The medical potential of CBD is amazing! Trials have shown that CBD shows promise for patients with chronic conditions such as cancer, epilepsy, and auto-immune disorders. It’s also been shown to help with inflammation, depression, anxiety, ADD, acts as a neuroprotectant, and much more.

Why Botanical Tinctures?

The true definition of a tincture is a liquid extract in an alcohol base.  Alcohol is used to extract a wide range of constituents that are present in plants, such as essential oils, resins, alkaloids, and a suite of other phytochemicals.  We love alcohol based liquid extracts because they provide a number of distinct benefits.

Quick Absorption: Alcohol extracts deliver therapeutic benefits more rapidly than other liquids.  The alcohol base is able to partially bypass the digestive process so that you begin absorbing the liquid as soon as it reaches the mucous membranes in your mouth and stomach.

Herbal Synergy: All of our alcohol-based tinctures are combined with other medicinal herbs to maximize the benefits of the cannabis tincture.  Alcohol is the best liquid to extract the various phytochemicals in the herbs.  These different plant compounds can help support, restore, and balance our bodies in a gentle way, without causing unwanted side effects.  This is a tried and true method of wellness that has been used by humans for centuries.

Taste and Smell: Alcohol extracts impart the herb’s smell, taste, and color and will closely reflect the make-up of the plants from which they are extracted.  Some of these flavors are foreign to the modern western palette, but herbs have been used by humans all over the world since ancient times.  Many people find that the flavor of herbs is an acquired flavor and that they rather enjoy the unique botanical notes in a tincture over time.

Flexible Dosing: Liquid extracts make it easy to titrate a dose that is specific for your needs.  Because you will absorb the cannabinoids and other botanical extracts relatively quickly in an alcohol base, you can more easily gague if you will require more, or if you have found the perfect dose for your needs.

The Benefits of Combining Botanicals With Cannabis – Presented by Gillian Levy at The Emerald Cup 2018

  • After a major motorcycle accident in 2015 I have lived with extreme pain from multiple injuries. I was prescribed opiate medication that caused me to fall, hallucinate and become incontinent without relieving my pain. I tried a bottle of CBD tincture from Humboldt apothecary and within 20 minutes of taking it my pain was gone! I have been taking CBDs since and I feel like a new person and express the joy to live.
